Yes, sure. The colours reference vintage posters from China, but Doe claims that it’s impossible to be guilty of cultural appropriation because she isn’t referencing any specific culture- but rather, a fantasy. It’s this exotification of other cultures that is so problematic. It doesn’t pay tribute to any actual culture but rather steals as it pleases. Other people’s cultures are not there for the plucking.The problem here is Western society’s sense of entitledness to other’s cultures- a culture isn’t a costume. It’s a mechanism of racism and white supremacy. It’s not the intent that matters, and you should read about cultural appropriation if you “don’t get it” and maybe it’ll help you understand why it’s offensive… although you yourself may not be affected, not taking the time to do your research and understand why someone else is being hurt only further contributes to the problem.
